Why Does a Concrete Floor Need to be Sealed?

Take a moment to think about concrete. It’s strong, long lasting, and something you probably think is impervious to damage.
That’s not always the case where this kind of flooring is concerned, though. In fact, there are a number of things that can happen to a concrete floor that could otherwise be prevented by using a sealant. Sealing concrete might sound strange, but it provides a lot of benefits like protection against stains and cracking, which can quickly ruin the aesthetic of a room.

Concrete is becoming a popular choice in flooring

Concrete is a flooring choice that has been gaining popularity. It’s not just something used in garages and basements anymore. It can be found in other rooms of the house and comes in tints and shades that complement a room while still providing a strong flooring option.
It’s not perfect, though, which is where concrete sealant comes into play. Sealant can protect your concrete flooring. Certain kinds of sealant even provide a glossy finish, which has the added benefit of giving your concrete a polished sheen.
We’ve all seen a garage with more stains on the concrete than you can count. Luckily, sealing concrete is a great way to avoid inadvertently staining an otherwise flawless concrete floor. Sealant protects against water and wear from heavy foot traffic, which prolongs the life and beauty of your floor. It also helps to prevent cracks, which can be a common problem with concrete flooring.

Sealant types

There are two main kinds of sealant available to you. Epoxies and urethane systems are a high-end product which offers superior protection.
They last a lot longer than other sealants and can handle more wear. The other choice you have is acrylic-resin sealers. This type still offers the same kind of protections as epoxies, but won’t last nearly as long and usually aren’t as strong.
Sealant doesn’t last forever. It needs to be reapplied in order to keep your floor protected. How often you need to replace your sealant depends on the kind of sealant and the level of floor maintenance you have.
Epoxies and urethane systems can last up to a decade before needing to be reapplied, while acrylic-resin only lasts a few years. If you’re not sure how long you can expect your particular sealant to last, or you need help deciding which kind of sealant works best for the amount of traffic your floor has, then contact East Coast Kemiko. We will be able to answer any questions you have about the process and advise you on the sealant that will work best for your concrete.
