Planning Your Basement Remodeling

Finishing a basement opens a whole new range of possibilities. Will you turn your basement into a movie theater? A gym? An extra bedroom? No matter what your plans are for your basement, careful planning is required to ensure that your vision turns into reality. Take a look at these tips for planning your basement remodel.

1. Evaluate Your Space

The first thing you need to do is thoroughly evaluate your basement. Start with a general inspection and look for aspects of your basement that you want/need to keep and things you want to replace. It helps to evaluate the square footage of your basement to see what you have room for and how to best optimize your space. You’ll also want to evaluate the beams and columns around the basement so you know what can and cannot be done with them.

2. Develop a Design Plan

Once you evaluate your basement and know what you’re working with, you can develop a design plan. How do you plan on using your basement? Make sure to include important aspects of your new space. Plan for columns, stairwells, plumbing, etc. Planning a basement design plan can be difficult because of the complexity of a basement. That’s why it’s always a good idea to work with a build/design company that has home remodeling specialists to help you accurately design your new basement.

3. Waterproofing

Before you start building, you’ll want to know whether your basement has been waterproofed. If it’s not, you will need to address this immediately. Look for any signs of watermarks, musty or moldy smells, mold, rotten wood, or anything else that indicates the presence of moisture. Finding the root cause of these problems before you remodel your basement will help save you time and money down the road.

4. Compensate for Limited Lighting

Lighting is usually the last thing people think about when they decide to remodel their basement. But the truth is that lighting can make or break the space. How will you add lighting to your underground room? In addition to any windows throughout the basement, try installing recessed lighting, sconces, fluorescent tubes, or LED wall washers. Talk to your basement remodeling specialists about your lighting options.
