Great Remodeling Starts with Great Design

No matter if you’re remodeling your kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, or another part of your home, getting started begins with planning and designing. The planning and design phase of a remodel is often overlooked, but it’s the most important phase of your project. Here’s your guide to a great design:

Great Remodeling Starts with Great Design

Step 1: Create a Stylebook

Have you noticed that you’re drawn to certain types of designs more than others? Do you know exactly what you like about these designs? To identify what you truly like about these designs, start by looking through magazines and the internet and finding pictures of kitchen or bathroom designs that appeal to you. Place the pictures you find into a clear sheet protector and insert that into a three-ring binder to create your stylebook. This stylebook will not only be helpful to you but also to the remodeling professionals that you will eventually hire.

Step 2: Define Your Goal

What is the reason why you want to remodel your kitchen, bathroom, or another part of your home? Do you want more space to entertain guests? Are you looking to sell your home soon? Determining your goal for your renovation project will help ensure that you and your remodeling team do what’s best for your end goal in mind.

Step 3: Create a Budget

After you’ve created a stylebook and identified the goal for your renovation, now it’s time to start thinking about numbers. How much are you willing to spend on your renovation project? How much are you willing to spend on certain aspects of your project? Start prioritizing what’s important to you for your renovation project and create a budget around these things.

Step 4: Set a Time Budget

We all know how easy it is for renovation projects to be prolonged. You can avoid this by setting a time budget. If you have a special event that would be affected by an unfinished home renovation project, create a time budget around this event. Once you’ve determined this time budget, be sure to share it with potential remodeling contractors.

Step 5: Have Realistic Expectations

When planning and designing your remodeling project, be sure to have realistic expectations. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your new kitchen or bathroom. Your remodeling project is going to take time, it’s going to be messy, and it’s going to be a financial burden. But as long as you meticulously plan and design your remodeling project, it should all be worth it in the end.
