As we approach the new year, we also approach new and exciting trends sweeping the design world. Flooring is an integral part of interior design, and follows trends the same way everything else does. Many seem to ignore the importance of these trends, until it’s too late, and their flooring is hopelessly outdated. Remember shag carpeting?

Flooring Trends to Watch for in 2018

Gray Flooring

Gray flooring, particularly gray hardwood, is taking over. It’s the perfect color to match any design, be it modern, classic, or traditional. Not only that, it also seems to bring a rustic feel that miraculously fits into every situation. It accompanies endless appliances, countertops, and furniture types. It’s unique, fresh, and an interesting twist on an old favorite.

Wide Plank Flooring

Hardwood flooring is typically made of planks that are about 3-4” wide. However, wide planks are going against the grain of this concept. They add to a sense of openness to any room. Instead of forcing everything into perspective, wide planks allow for a spacious impression. Longer planks are also becoming trendy as we enter 2018. This flooring trend is definitely one to watch out for.

Colorful Rugs Replacing Carpet

Carpet as a material is still widely used, particularly in bedrooms and other areas where children frequent. Carpet provides a safe, plush surface, and is perfect for adding a colorful accent. However, not everyone wants to sacrifice their hardwood, vinyl, linoleum, or tile flooring to accommodate carpet. Increasingly, it’s trendy to use an area rug to add a splash of color to a room. It adds that comforting carpet feel, while still respecting the underlying flooring material. Not to mention, area rugs can be swapped easily, which can’t be said for carpet.

Vinyl is Here to Stay

Because of vinyl’s ability to mimic almost any floor material, its popularity is rising dramatically. It’s not too expensive, but not the cheapest option. Vinyl has so many benefits–it’s easy to clean, it resists stains, and it comes in a nearly endless variety of colors and textures.

You can recreate the texture and appearance of hardwood flooring, without paying the hefty price tag, and without needing to keep up with the maintenance. Because of this, its popularity focuses around the fact that it is versatile and flexible. Vinyl doesn’t look like it’s a material that will fade away anytime soon.\

Concrete flooring is a lasting choice which will work for any space in your home. It’s not the first choice from most home-owners, but it’s not something which should be overlooked because it is durable, versatile, sculptable, and cost effective.
