Annual Home Maintenance Checklist

Each year, people worldwide create resolutions for healthier and happier living. This January, take some time to think about resolutions to create a better home. The new year is time for new beginnings and a fresh start. There is no better time than now to focus on improvements in and around your home. Here is a home maintenance checklist to keep your home in optimal condition all year long.

checking home for the year

Clean Filters and Vents

Ensure clean air is circulating throughout your home by changing your furnace filter and cleaning your air conditioner parts. Clear debris from dryer vents and any other air vents throughout your home. This is essential now more than ever as working from home has become the new norm.

Clean and Grout your Shower, Tubs, and Tile

Cleaning tile and sealing the grout lines need to be done at least once a year. Not only will it make the area look clean, but it will help prevent mold and mildew from growing. The waterproof seal often breaks down due to heat and moisture. Resealing grout requires cleaning and applying new grout to the area.

Inspect Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers

January is a perfect time to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Testing them regularly and replacing batteries helps ensure your family stays safe should there be a fire in your home. Did you know fire extinguishers have an expiration date? It is recommended that you replace your fire extinguisher every 10 to 12 years. If your fire extinguisher is expired or you don’t have one, you should consider purchasing one to protect your family.

Inspect your Exterior

Walk around the outside of your home and check for any signs of damage that may have appeared. Check the siding for any cracks, chipping paint, leaks, mold, or damage from pests. Take a look at the foundation for any cracks which could indicate a structural problem. Look at the chimney and roof for signs of wear.

Tighten Knobs and Inspect Locks

And tighten any items such as knobs or racks that may have become loose throughout the year. While you are tightening these items, ensure that all of your locks and deadbolts are functioning properly. If any locks are damaged, replace them to ensure security.
